Mari Slaattelid is one of Norway’s leading contemporary artists. It was not by chance that she was awarded first prize in the Carnegie Art Awards in 2000, and in 2019 was made artist for the Bergen International Festival Exhibition. Slaattelid is an exceptional colourist. At the same time, she often has a more theoretical perspective, by, for example, initiating dialogues with older artists such as Lars Hertervig or G. B. Tiepolo. This strategy is remarkably productive, because with this approach she can both articulate something about the older artists she converses with, and her own work.
