Sigurd Sverdrup Sandmo

Biography

Sigurd Sverdrup Sandmo (b. 1971) has served as the Chief Executive Officer of Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra since 2024. He has a long and diverse career as a leader and institution developer in the fields of museums, visual arts, and music. Sandmo has previously held positions as Director of KORO – Public Art Norway (2021–2024), Head of the Royal Collections (2019–2021), Director of the Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen and the two other composer homes in Bergen (2013–2019), as well as Director of The Edvard Grieg International Piano Competition during the same period. He has also served as Director of the Leprosy Museum St. Jørgen’s Hospital.

 

Sandmo is known as an engaged and innovative communicator. As Director of the Leprosy Museum, he brought the small institution into the national spotlight on several occasions. As Director of the Grieg Competition, he contributed to a renewal of the traditional piano competition concept. In 2018, he led the project Grieg Minute by Minute, where all of Grieg’s works were performed live on NRK TV in a 30-hour broadcast.

Sigurd Sverdrup Sandmo is the brother of historian and music critic Erling Sandmo (1963–2020), who for several years gave concert introductions and lectures at the Rosendal Chamber Music Festival.
